Bay Minette – A 57-year-old Gulf Shores woman was found guilty this week of kidnapping a child on a Gulf Shores beach last summer.

A Baldwin County jury deliberated just over an hour before finding Kathie Marie Godsey guilty of kidnapping a child at knifepoint at a public beach in July 2012, said Assistant District Attorney Michaelyn Gober, who prosecuted the case. Sentencing is set for September 26, with Godsey facing a potential sentence of 10-99 years or life in prison.

“The six-year-old victim was vacationing at the beach with his family,” Gober said. “While washing off his boogie board with his 14-year-old cousin, Ms. Godsey grabbed him and held a knife to his throat. She took him into the restroom where she ordered everyone out or she would kill him.

“The victim’s uncle, having been alerted by the teenager, ran into the restroom and rescued his nephew. Ms. Godsey was arrested and claimed to law enforcement that she would not have hurt the boy but wanted someone to shoot her,” Gober said.

During the trial, Godsey changed her story and attempted to portray the uncle as the villain and convince the jury that she was only trying to save the boy from him.

“I am so glad that the jury saw through her lies,” said Baldwin County District Attorney Hallie Dixon. “This was obviously a traumatic experience for a little boy and it is important that his family can assure him that the kidnapper will be held accountable.”
